Midwifery Care

Midwives are the traditional care providers for mothers and infants. Midwives are trained professionals with expertise and skills in supporting women to maintain healthy pregnancies and have optimal births and recoveries during the postpartum period. Midwives provide women with individualized care uniquely suited to their physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and cultural needs. Midwifery is a woman-centered empowering model of maternity care that is utilized in all the countries of the world with the best maternal and infant outcomes. Prenatal Care

Prenatal

Hour long visits on the following schedule:

0-28 weeks: every 4 weeks

28-36 weeks: every 2 weeks

36-41 weeks: weekly

41-42 weeks: every 2-3 days


Counseling and education


Laboratory tests performed in house


Offer cell-free DNA testing


Fetal monitoring by assessing growth and fetal heart tones as needed


Referral for ultrasounds


Rhogam available for rh negative clients


Offer testing for gestational diabetes and group beta streptococcus (GBS)


Monitoring vital signs


Continuous risk assessment to be sure that the client remains low-risk, healthy and appropriate for midwifery care

Midwives will attend births for low-risk healthy people between 37-42 weeks at their home


On-call availability from 37-42 weeks


Assessing labor history


Offer emotional support and reassurance


Offer botanical treatments as needed


Offer GBS antibiotics as needed




Physical assessment, including labor pattern, vital signs, fetal heart tones and cervical dilation


Delivery of baby


Immediate postpartum and newborn care, midwives staying 4-6 hours to ensure mom and baby are transitioning well


Suturing as needed 


Initiate transport to the hospital when needed


Continuous educational support


Continuous risk assessment to be be sure the client remains low-risk and appropriate for midwifery care

Postpartum care 


Hour long visits on the following schedule:


  • 24-48 hour: home visit
  • 3-4 day: Optional home visit with a lactation consultant for breastfeeding support
  • 1 week: office visit
  • 3 week: Optional office visit
  • 5 week: optional office visit
  • 6-8 week: Final office visit


Maternal vital signs


Laboratory tests available


Breastfeeding support


Assess perineum and perineal healing when applicable


Assess bleeding


Assess psychological/social health and support, monitor for Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMAD)


Assess nutrition and sleep


Rhogam available for rh negative clients


Continuous educational support regarding parenting, breastfeeding, newborn and maternal health


Continuous risk assessment to be sure that client remains low risk, healthy and appropriate for midwifery care

Newborn care 

Newborns will be seen on the following schedule:

24-48 hours: home visit

1-2 week: office visit


Monitor vital signs including weighing the baby


Oral assessments to ensure a healthy latch


Monitor for jaundice


Assess newborn behavior


Offer vitamin K and erythromycin eye ointment after birth


Offer Newborn Screening Test (the "heel-poke") and Critical Congenital Heart Defect screening 


Referral to Lactation Consultant or Pediatrician when applicable


Continuous risk assessment to be sure that the baby remains low-risk, healthy and appropriate for midwifery care
